DAVID AND JESUS - THE BETRAYAL OF INNOCENT BLOOD

Text: 1 Samuel 19:5

1 Samuel 19:5 For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?

Introduction: For a couple of years now, I think it is, I have been going through the Old Testament in Sunday sermons, usually in the evening, showing that the Lord Jesus Christ is portrayed by prophecy, type, or figure throughout every book. I am following the example of our Lord, who met with two discouraged disciples on the road to Emmaus ...

Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

Jesus began with the man who wrote Genesis, and He used all the prophets, which includes Malachi, to show them that the Old Testament testified of Him. This is in line with what He told the religious people of His day:

John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

I've brought a couple of messages already to show from 1 Samuel that David is one of the great types, or prophetic pictures, of our Lord in the Old Testament. Today I want to take our text verse and show you that it is an illustration of what happened in the earthly life of our Lord. Look at the verse again:

1 Samuel 19:5 For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?

Please note the words, "wilt thou sin against innocent blood" ...

Now turn in your New Testament to:

Matthew 27:3-4 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.


I. THERE WAS A SIN PROBLEM

1 Samuel 19:5 For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?

John 19:11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

Likewise, we ALL have a sin problem

    A. People inherit a sin problem from Adam and parents

    B. People increase their sin problem by practice

Sinners by birth and behavior, by nature and by choice

II. THERE WAS A SATANIC PRESENCE

1 Samuel 16:14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

Luke 22:3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.

    A. Satan moves in lost people today (Eph. 2:1-3)

    B. He motivates and leads lost people today (Jn. 8:44)

III. THERE WAS A SPECIAL PASSION

1 Samuel 18:8-12 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? 9 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward. 10 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand. 11 And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice. 12 And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul.

John 13:2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;

    A. Lost people rebel against God's word

    B. Lost people resist God's will (Acts 7:51)

IV. THERE WAS A SINLESS PERSON

We understand, of course, that David was not completely sinless, but in the matter of Saul, David had not sinned against the king. Saul's own son, Jonathan, testified:

1 Samuel 19:5 For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?

Matthew 27:4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.

    A. The Lord's critics are wrong

    B. The Lord's critics are wicked

Men do not criticize the Bible because it contradicts itself; they criticize the Bible because it contradicts THEM.

V. THERE WAS A SAD PASSING

Both Saul and Judas committed suicide:

1 Samuel 31:4 Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these ncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

Matthew 27:5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

    A. Such a death was undignified - both of the first king of Israel and of one of the 12 apostles

    B. Such a death was unnecessary

VI. THERE WAS A SOVEREIGN PRONOUNCED

2 Samuel 5:3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel.

Matthew 2:1-2 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

    A. The rule of Jesus is certain

    B. The rule of Jesus is coming

VII. THERE WAS A SALVATION PERFORMED

1 Samuel 19:5 For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?

The words "great salvation" should remind us of:

Hebrews 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

2 Peter 3:15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

We are saved:

    A. Because of the Lord's purity

    B. Because of the Lord's payment
