O'Neal Pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church Albany, Georgia Scripture Reading: Deut. 5:1-22 Text: Deut. 5:5 Deuteronomy 5:5 (I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to shew you the word of the LORD: for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying, Introduction: Tonight we are looking again for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the Old Testament. Jesus said this should be done: John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. This is the fifth book of Moses, and Jesus said: John 5:46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. Notice that Moses said that he stood between the Lord and the people TO SHOW THEM THE WORD OF THE LORD. Moses brought God's word to the people. This is another way in which he was a type, or prophetic picture, of Jesus, for our Lord is not only the mediator of salvation but also the mediator of the scriptures. Hebrews 1:1-2 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; I. JESUS EMBODIED THE SCRIPTURES John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth. Jesus is the mediator of the scriptures so much that He is called THE WORD. A. A word expresses the mind 1. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh 2. Jesus is the expression of the mind of God B. A word explains a message 1. A message is best expressed by God 2. Jesus is God's message to mankind II. JESUS EMBRACED THE SCRIPTURES Matthew 5:17-18 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. A. He believed them 1. The Genesis account of creation 2. The Noahic flood 3. Jonah in the whale B. He battled Satan with them - Matt. 4 III. JESUS EXPOUNDED THE SCRIPTURES Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. A. He taught with confidence as one having authority B. He taught with comparisons 1. Parables 2. Illustrations 3. Similitudes - "as ... so" "like ... so" (Hos. 12:10) 4. Scripture with scripture IV. JESUS ENLIGHTENED MEN TO THE SCRIPTURES Luke 24:32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? A. He unlocks the scriptures B. He unlocks the secrets of the Bible C. He unlocks the spirit and sensibility of man V. JESUS ENFLAMED MEN WITH THE SCRIPTURES Luke 24:32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? Their hearts BURNED ... Jesus enflames men with the word of God! A. To salvation 1. Rom. 10:17; Heb. 4:12 2. Saul was "pricked" - Acts 9 B. To soul-winning 1. Acts 4:20 2. Jeremiah - couldn't keep his mouth shut 3. The Bible gives a bad case of the "I-can't-help-its" when it comes to witnessing C. To stand D. To serve
