Scripture Reading: Isaiah 53:1-12
Text: Isaiah 53:6
Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Introduction: A Bible-believing fundamentalist believes the Bible he holds in his hand is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible word. He holds certain grand truths of that Bible to be FUNDAMENTAL and makes those truths qualifications for fellowship. One of those fundamentals is expressed in our scripture reading this morning. It is the wonderful truth of
THE SUBSTITUTIONARY DEATH OF CHRIST
This doctrine is non-negotiable. It is not a secondary doctrine; it is PRIMARY. It is not INCIDENTAL; it is FUNDAMENTAL. No one can go to heaven and deny this truth. No one becomes a Christian without embracing this truth. This truth is SAVING truth; it is the heart of the gospel of the grace of God!
This chapter, Isaiah 53, is the greatest prophecy in the Bible describing the substitutionary work of the death of the Son of God. It is the exact cross reference to the expression, "Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures," in 1 Corinthians 15:3.
Notice the references to the substitutionary death of Christ in this wonderful chapter:
Isaiah 53:4 - "our"
Isaiah 53:5 - "our"
Isaiah 53:6 - "us"
Isaiaqh 53:8 - "our"
Isaiah 53:10 - "for sin"
Isaiah 53:11 - "bear their iniquities"
Isaiah 53:12 - "bare the sin of many"
Jesus is the LAMB OF GOD
There are 98 verses in the Bible where the word "lamb" is found. The first occurrence:
Genesis 22:7-8 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
The second occurrence of the word "lamb" is in Ex. 12, which tells us of the institution of the passover:
Exodus 12:3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Exodus 12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
1 Peter 1:18-19 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Exodus 12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
Exodus 12:8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
Revelation 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready
