THE SHOCKING, SWEET SPIRIT OF CHRIST ABOUT SUFFERING IN HELL

By Michael D. O'Neal                  Pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church                  Albany, Georgia

Scripture Reading: Luke 16:19-31

Text: Luke 16:23

Luke 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

Introduction: One of the things that causes the liberals to accuse fundamentalists of not having "the sweet spirit of Christ" is the fact that we preach about the subject of hell. We try to alarm people about hell. Liberals, on the other hand, are always trying to be positive, giving the promise, "Something GOOD is going to happen to you!" The Bible says of them,

Romans 16:17-18 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. 18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

They use "good words and fair speeches" to deceive simple people.

The truth is, Jesus preached about hell, and liberals would not have wanted to hear him then, and they would not want to hear Him preach now if He were here in the flesh.

One of the alarming things about modern Christianity is the absence of preaching from the pulpits about eternal torment. Look with me at what our "Sweet" Savior said about the subject of hell!

II. THE PAINS OF HELL

Mark 9:42-48 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea. 43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: 48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

The pains of hell consist of, in addition to the burning flames, the agonies of:

A. Reality

B. Realization

C. Recognition

D. Requests denied

E. Remembrance

F. Restraint

G. Regret

III. THE PERMANENCE OF HELL

Matthew 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Matthew 18:8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.

Notice that Matt. 25:46 says "EVERLASTING punishment" and that Matt. 18:8 says "EVERLASTING fire."

A. Everlasting torment

B. Everlasting thirsting

C. Everlasting thinking

D. Everlasting twisting and turning

IT MAY SHOCK YOU, BUT OUR SWEET SAVIOR SPOKE OF

IV. THE POPULATION OF HELL

Matthew 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

A. The unholy

B. The unhappy

C. The unhelped

D. Liars

E. Lustful

F. Losers

G. Lost, lost, lost!

You do NOT have to go to hell!

Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, was buried, and rose again the third day. He paid the price for your sins, so that you do NOT have to go to hell. He offers eternal life to you as a free gift. You may have that gift today by faith in Jesus Christ, trusting Him and Him alone for your salvation. Don't trust YOUR works; trust HIS.
